The license posture — plain English
You can read the full license on GitHub. Here's the practical posture:
Public code is fair source
Published public distributions use FSL-1.1-Apache.
Review before commercial use
Check the repository LICENSE before production commercial use.
Private repos stay private
Internal workspace members and derivative works remain proprietary.
Your data stays yours
gald3r is file-first. Your task state, vault, and configs never leave your machine.
This summary is not legal advice; the repository LICENSE is the source of truth.
Frequently asked
Is gald3r really free forever?
The core file-first framework — all agents, skills, commands, rules, and hooks — is free under FSL-1.1-Apache and will stay that way. Optional paid features (the Throne desktop app, the Agent runtime, hosted team dashboards) are on the roadmap. Nothing free today will move behind a paywall.
What happened to Slim / Advanced / Valhalla?
Those tier names are retired. Starting with v2.0.0 (The Engine Release), gald3r ships as a single framework with the full component set. The self-hosted Docker backend (formerly 'Valhalla') remains free and optional — run it if you want agent memory and MCP tools backed by a local Postgres/pgvector stack.
What is the Throne desktop app?
gald3r_throne (codename: Hlidskjalf) is a Tauri 2 + React desktop app that gives you a visual control plane across all your gald3r projects — dashboards, dry-run apply with backup/rollback, personality packs, and a Chrono scheduler. It's in pre-release (v0.1.0-design) and the signed installer hasn't shipped yet. Join the waitlist to get notified.
What is the Agent runtime?
gald3r_agent is the proprietary Python harness that powers the gald3r CLI (init, install, upgrade, doctor). It will ship as a packaged binary so no source build is required. Currently gated until precompiled installers are ready (T529).
Do I need a Gald3r account?
No. Gald3r is file-first. It lives in your repo alongside your code. No accounts, no logins, no telemetry. Your data never leaves your machine unless you push it.
Can I use Gald3r with my team?
Yes. Since gald3r is git-native, the .gald3r/ folder commits with your repo. Your team shares task state, decisions, and constraints automatically through version control. For multi-repo coordination, the PCAC system lets you broadcast tasks across parent/child/sibling repos.
